Last field trip of the year (thank god!)

Generally, I over plan and over think every detail of field trips. Not so much today. Today was supposed to be just a fun relaxing day in the park. A day to say goodbye to kindergarten and friends. It didn't end as I had under planned it to.

While I was away on a much needed personal day last Friday, the parents got together and planned to bring food and activities. My co-teachers filled me in and said the parents had planned and worked out who would bring what. Cool, great no prob. As the kids were playing in the morning I saw authentic Mexican food that got me looking forward to lunch. I even tuned down doughnuts to save my appetite and ww points for lunch.

Mid morning the weather decided to lean on the 30% chance that there would be isolated thunder storms. There was loud thunder and rain but no lightning thankfully. All the parents moved to food to the covered picnic are and acted all concerned. Our bus had dropped us off and gone to transport a different group. I assured them the rain would let up and worst case scenario I had books to read in the covered picnic area. One parent was concerned about lightning following the thunder. I assured her that I would be the one to get hit, being as I had the metal whistle.

At about 11 o'clock a group of parents brought out pinatas. Normally this would stress me out but I just let it roll of my back since I had no previous knowledge of these plans. If I were in charge, there would be a time or hit limit and each child would have had a baggie to put their 5 pieces of candy in. I would have made sure everyone got the same amount and all the extra crap I would have saved for another day or for my prize box. Well, it wasn't that organized and even though I had no idea this would happen and wasn't planning to organize it, I was the only teacher who brought a whistle. I ended up having to blow the whistle to get the kids to stop swinging and give someone else a turn. This can take a while w/ 60 kids and 5 pinatas. Needles to say as they tired or got bored, people slowly migrated over to the food. I had to stay at the pinatas due to my whistle powers. Once all was said and done and all the pinatas were broken and everyone had a turn I went over to get lunch.

As I walked over to the picnic tables I was building my plate in my head while thinking of what I had seen earlier. However, when I arrived at the tables everything was picked over. There was some cilantro and sour cream left from the authentic Mexican food I was so excited about but nothing of substance. I ended up having a few things from a veggie and fruit platter and chips.

I made it through the rest of the day, organized a potato sack race, a bubble station, Frisbee and koosh ball games and was ready to get on the bus. All kids were present and accounted for and everything was good. No one was struck by lightening or lost. Then Jacob came up to me and pointed out that Konner had stuck gum in his hair. When I asked Konner why he did this he tried to say it was an accident and argued with me. Little brat! We have kindergarten graduation in 2 days. I hope his parents can get it out or at least give him a cute haircut. Poor kid.
